I like the Message translation as well:
Investigate my life, O God,
find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
get a clear picture of what I'm about;
See for yourself whether I've done anything wrong — then guide me on the road to eternal life.
It's a prayer for God to examine you. A prayer that God will use HIS standards to see if we measure up. The confusion sets in when we use man-made standards to measure our spirituality.
